Course objectives

Specific objectives: The course will teach students the fundamentals of the neuroaesthetic approach to the study of aesthetic appreciation in the visual and auditory domain. It will address the following questions: 1) What are the anatomo-functional correlates of aesthetic appreciation? 2) What are the current neurocomputational models which best describe and explain aesthetic appreciation? What is the evolutionary significance of the sense of beauty in humans?

Results of learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will 1) possess an introductory knowledge of the discipline of Neuroaesthtics; 2) will be able to interpret and understand the current experimental literature on the subject; 3) will have an understanding of the Predictive coding account applied to aesthetic appreciation; 4) will be aware of the possible applications of Neuroaesthetics to neuroriabilitation and psychotherapy, as well as to normal subjects and the social context.

Program

Course content: 1) Neuroaesthetics: brief history of the discipline; 2) The behavioural and neuro-anatomical correlates of aesthetic appreciation with specific reference to three experimental studies published by Neppoi-Modona and his coworkers; 3) A possible neuro-computational model of aesthetic appreciation within the Predictive coding account of cognition; 4) Beauty perception and learning: is there a link and why? 5) Beauty perception in an evolutionary perspective and its possible applications in neurorehabilitation and in normal subjects.
