Course objectives

Mood disorders are a group of chronic and disabling mental illnesses with a complex pathophysiological basis. The identification of potential biomarkers is fundamental to improve the management and treatment of patients with mood disorders. Glucogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) is a multifunctional enzyme with a crucial role in the etiology and treatment of mood disorders. Recent findings suggested GSK-3 as a putative biomarker in mood disorders, both for differential diagnosis between Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD), and to reflect disease state and/or treatment responses.

Specific objectives and learning outcomes:

- to provide an overview of mood disorders;

- to provide an overview of the role of biomarkers in the diagnosis of mood disorders;

- to deepen the putative role of biomarkers in the treatment of mood disorders;

- to know the transduction pathways in which GSK-3 in involved;

- to discuss the putative role of GSK-3 as a novel biomarker or as a therapeutic target;

- to understand the current knowledge about the neural mechanisms of mood disorders;

- to understand the role of GSK-3 in the control of neuronal activity.
