Phd thesis

My PhD project aims to clarify the interplay between body ownership and the phenomenal tactile experience in the context of multisensory integration. To this end, various experiments will be conducted using different techniques. Starting from understanding how the brain can create an illusory tactile experience (i.e., phantom touch) and going on by using different non-invasive brain stimulation techniques like the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (TDCS) to understand what are the brain areas that contribute to the phenomenal experience of touch. The findings of the present project will help define a more comprehensive understanding of how we know and feel that our body belongs to us, while also specifying the contribution of body ownership in generating veridical and non-veridical tactile experiences.
