Grounding the Self: implicit biomarkers of bodily-self representation development from the intra-uterine to the postnatal life
My PhD project aims to investigate the emergence of bodily-self representation (BSR) during the perinatal period. With this purpose I will focus on the study of such developmental steps, comprising the complex multisensory and sensorimotor experiences, that promote the emergence of a mature "embodied” Self. I will capitalize on both behavioural and neurophysiological techniques, such as fetal ultrasound, kinematics and heartbeat recording and postnatal brain activity recordings (e.g., electrocardiogram, electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy). The objective of my PhD project is to combine these different techniques and populations (foetuses, newborns, infants and adults) to unveil how BSR mechanisms (such as multisensory integration, perception-action coupling, sense of agency and body ownership) emerge.
