Towards a personalized medicine in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) by a patient-tailored genetic/biomarker combined approach

ALS is characterized by significant phenotypic variability, leading to notable differences among patients in terms of age of onset, gender prevalence, progression rate, burden, and prognosis. The clinical manifestations also exhibit considerable variability, primarily influenced by factors such as age, site of onset, involvement of cognitive/behavioral functions, and genetic predisposition.

In this project, my intention is to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of biological, neuroradiological, genetic, and neuropsychological markers in a cohort of ALS patients. The primary objective is to achieve a thorough characterization of the patients' phenotypes in a detailed, effective, and comprehensive manner. The data collected will be subjected to analysis using artificial intelligence techniques, aiming to reveal meaningful associations and insights.

Additionally, this project will pursue collateral objectives, including the evaluation of potential correlations between biomarker levels and neuropsychological/neuroradiological markers, longitudinal trends of neuroradiological and biomarkers, along with their potential correlations with changes in clinical phenotype observed during subsequent follow-up. Furthermore, this project aims to identify possible biological and genetic factors underlying the different ALS phenotypes.
