Final defense
- The thesis must be submitted by the deadline indicated in the "Deadlines" file. The submission date falls at the end of January of the year following the conclusion of the Doctorate (for example, if the end of the Doctorate is in October 2025, the thesis must be submitted by 31 January 2026).
- There are no formal instructions for writing the thesis, so the choice of font, size, margins, number of pages, etc. is free, but must be agreed with the Supervisor and approved by the latter.
- Two different types of thesis can be written: 1) thesis with a classic structure: introduction, state of the art, research project(s), discussions, conclusions; 2) thesis with a collection of produced/published articles: introduction, articles produced/published in the context of the Doctorate, conclusions. Submitted and in proof articles should be included in a format comparable to monograph thesis content. The thesis should be accompanied by a brief summary (Pre-thesis_Report) and a list of publications.
- Before submission, the thesis must be reviewed and approved by the Supervisor, who then indicates to the doctoral student that he or she can proceed with submission. To submit the thesis, it is necessary to send the thesis file in Word and PDF format via email to the PhD Coordinator, Prof. Andrea Calvo.
- In the months preceding the submission of the thesis, the PhD student's Supervisor identifies two thesis reviewers and their substitutes, who are then approved by the PhD Scientific Board and will form the thesis Commission. After the thesis has been submitted, the thesis is sent by Prof. Calvo to the reviewers who proceed with the revision in the following weeks. The outcome of the revision, once received by the Doctorate, is communicated via email to the PhD student. If no revisions are requested to the thesis, the discussion takes place. If revisions are requested, the PhD student is required to carry them out within the required timeframes and to send the revised thesis back to Prof. Calvo, who will send it back to the reviewers. The reviewers will then confirm whether the discussion can take place.
- Once the thesis review process is completed, a date is established for the oral discussion of the thesis and the date is communicated to the PhD student. A thesis discussion session is established for each PhD student. The discussion consists in the presentation of the thesis by the PhD student in English language and with the support of slides. The PhD student presents his final defense in about 20 minutes, followed by the discussion with the Commission and subsequently the proclamation.
